The Watseka city attorney is investigating the city's part in a class action lawsuit filed against the maker of body armor.

Watseka Police Chief Roger Lebeck told the city's Public Safety Committee last night.
Lebeck said the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In the meantime there is an allegation 'and it is an allegation at this point', he said, that some fibers in some of the vests are not up to standards.

Some officers are wearing vests with those fibers, he said.

Lebeck said he asked city attorney Mike Dietchweiler to look at the lawsuit and see what the city's action should be.

'I was not able to talk to him before tonight's meeting,' Lebeck said.

If the city is not going to be involved in the lawsuit, he said there is a deadline to respond in that regard.

Mayor Ted Martin said, 'I'm more concerned about substantiating the allegations. If it's true, we need to see if we need to replace the body armor.'

A full version of this story appears in the March 29 edition of the Times-Republic."
